Hello!  :mitch:

I have just read that Microsoft update to Windows 10 will be free for Windows 7 and 8 users.

(The Greek link I read:  http://www.naftemporiki.gr/story/904885/aifnidiasmos-apo-ti-microsoft-me-dorean-upgrade-sta-windows-10-kai-olografiko-headset-upologisti )

Is this true? I would appreciate some more information.

From http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/01/21/the-next-generation-of-windows-windows-10/

"We announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch. [* Hardware and software requirements apply.  Feature availability may vary by device. Some editions excluded. ]

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge
."

"It is our intent that most of these devices will qualify, but some hardware/software requirements apply and feature availability may vary by device. Devices must be connected to the internet and have Windows Update enabled. ISP fees may apply. Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 Update required. Some editions are excluded: Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise outside of this offer. We will be sharing more information and additional offer terms in coming months. "

Windows 10 Installs Automatically On Windows 7 And Windows 8, Microsoft Guarantees Success

Build 9926 of the Windows 10 Technical Preview released last week can be downloaded and installed via Windows Update on Windows 7 and Windows 8... For now this method comes with a caveat: a small (additional) file is needed...

Here is the first sign of Windows 10. M$ have scanned my desktop (without my knowledge) and using those GWX files have left an icon in the systray. This leads me to reserve and investigate Windows 10. Tried to put a screen shot in but it would not work for me.

When I booted up this morning, I found that waiting for me.... And... being half asleep...I "reserved" my copy without thinking enough.

When I didn't see anything about it on other forums, I started to worry about being the victim of some "social engineering".
I hope it was legit.

Right clicking on the newly appearing icon gives you these choices:

Get Windows 10
Reserve Your Free upgrade
Go to Windows Update
Get to know Windows 10

If you launch Windows Update, you'll see a nag screen there as well ...

Thanks for the links to 2 good articles Corrine.
First I'll test one netbook with CPU - Z to see if it has the things necessary then I'll look over what will be removed and decide if I'm willing to give that control over Windows updates up.

This pretty much will give you your answers for Windows 10 MS official US site.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/Default.aspx

If you reserve a upgrade to Windows 10. it will set an icon in the taskbar, you can remove your reservation as well.

I know media center is gone, if I upgrade. I do have three 8.1 pro systems with media center and two 8.1 versions. It's my understanding 8.1 pro would move to Windows 10 pro. Win 7 pro or ultimate will move to Windows 10 pro.

:o Surprised yesterday also, I had just turned on auto update

I'm considering removing the Win 10 Icon from my tray and  getting  MS updates when I choose

The Windows 10 icon disappeared in July. Why? Can I get it back?
